Dedicated to: Heather…you posted a challenge that I couldn't resist.  Yes, I am the resident sap…this has already been established. Anyway.  I hope you don't mind that I "borrowed" snippets of your letter. I just figured I'd use it as the contents of *the* letter since I thought it captured the moment so well...it did get an enthusiastic "seal of approval." ;)

**********

Future fic. Katie and Jessie's relationship has survived college, and now one of them wants to propose--you choose which one. Just a one parter fic, so get creative with how she proposes! :) Should include at least 2 of the following:

*Ice (as usual)
*The proposer thinking (momentarily) that they've lost the ring and
panicking
*Squealing
*Jessie and Katie's "song" coincidentally coming on the radio
*A mention of *the* letter (does Jessie still have it? mention it any
way you want)
*An Evan or Mischa movie reference

To celebrate the one-year anniversary of our "reunion," Jessie suggested we go away for the weekend. I offered to help with the planning and was turned down. She said she had it all set up; all I had to do was pack "nice, comfortable clothes." I asked her what she meant, and she just said, "Well, I suggest jeans and hiking boots." I know where we're going now; we're going camping.

Friday afternoon, Jess came to pick me up. "Hey Katie, ready to go?" she kissed me hello.

"Sure thing." I loaded my overnight bag into the back seat and we were off. She wouldn't tell me where we were going, but I did notice that we were leaving the city. The route we took was very familiar, that's when I realized that we were going to the state park. Yes, "the" state park where we took a major step in our relationship.   I thought it was really sweet of her to take us there.

"We've been here before," I remarked as we approached the entrance.

She smiled. "Yes, we have."

She went inside the Visitor's Center and got the keys to our cabin.  When she came back she explained that our cabin was secluded from the others and that we had a great view of the lake. We drove for about 2 miles until we reached our cabin. The first thing I noticed was the beautiful wrap-around porch and the hammock.

We unloaded everything from the back seat and made our way inside.  While Jessie put away the groceries in the tiny kitchen I set our bags in the bedroom. I then came back into the main room and went about setting up my boom box. We'd both had a really rough week, so we spent the night cuddled in front of the fireplace, listening to the soothing sounds of Lady Day.

The next morning, while we ate breakfast, I noticed there was something different about Jess' demeanor; I could tell she was nervous about something. Things were going really great between up, but I was still worried. Not being able to keep quiet, I asked her. "Jess, is something wrong?"

"No, Katie. Why do you ask?"

"Well, it just a vibe I'm getting…like something major's gonna happen," I answered carefully.

She turned pale, but shrugged "Don't worry, babe." She wrapped her arms around me, and before I could say anything else, we were kissing. As soon as we pulled apart, she took my hand and grabbed the picnic basket we had prepared.

We spent the afternoon at the lake. We swam, ate our wonderful picnic, read, and cuddled on our blanket. It was a really wonderful afternoon; Jessie was as caring and attentive as usual and what little doubts I had vanished.

After we went back to the cabin and showered, Jessie said that she needed me to got to the store to buy ice. When I came back, I couldn't believe my eyes. Somehow, she'd managed to pull this off; beautiful strawberry-scented candles illuminated the room and I could hear Norah Jones' Turn Me On playing softly in the background. I walked further into the room and saw that she'd spread out a sleeping bag in front of the fireplace and that it was covered with rose petals.

"Hi," she whispered, somewhat nervously.

"Wow, Jess, this is beautiful." I managed to answer in awe. God, I love her.

"Thanks," she smiled. "I wanted to do something special for our anniversary."

"Well, I'd say you have. This is gorgeous. Now would you come here," I extended my hand. "I think I have to show you how much I appreciate this," I grinned as I pulled her close and we kissed. After a while, I barely registered that my feet's numb and felt very cold. Oh, yeah, the ice. After we broke apart, I bent to pick it up. "Where you do want this?"

"Oh, I'll take that," she said as she dumped it in a metal bucket and puts a bottle of Dom Perignon in it. She was going all out tonight; yay. "Katie, there's something really important I need to tell you," she said as she came back to me.

"What is it, Billie. You can tell me anything," I answered cautiously.

She motioned for me to sit while she stood in front of me. When I sat, she pulled out a piece of paper from her pocket, "You remember this babe?" she asked as she began to read it:

"I have never felt so close to someone as fast as I have with you…I want you to feel like you can tell me anything, because I feel that way with you…Ever since I met you, I guess you could say you've intrigued me…You're mysterious, cute, sweet, generous...'"

I gasped. "Of course I do. That's from first letter I ever wrote you."

"Yes," she beamed. "It is."

I returned the smile. "Ok, but why are you bringing it up tonight? To reminisce?"

"Sort of. I wanted to read that passage from the letter because that's exactly how I feel about you, how I've always felt about you."

"Aw, Jess…"

"Hold on," she said as she went to the kitchen and got the champagne.  She put the bucket on the floor and smiled. Taking a deep breath, she took my hand. "Katie, I love you. You were the one person who showed me how to really, truly love someone. And I know that I want to spend the rest of my live with you. I always want to feel the way I feel when I'm with you. I want to show how just how much I love you every single day." She knelt in front of me. "Katherine Anne Singer, would you make me the happiest girl in the world and be my wife?"

My jaw dropped, my hands were shaking and I couldn't say a word. How did she manage to pull this off? I mean, if there was ever going to be a proposal, I always assumed I'd be the one doing it. Yet, here we were…wow. I noticed that she was getting worried.

"Kate, I'm sorry. It's too soon, isn't it? I knew I should've waited," she started panicking. "It's ok. I mean, if you don't want to marry me…"

"Jess! Hold on…I was just speechless, babe, that's all. You want my answer?" I asked innocently and she nodded eagerly.

"Ok, then…yes, yes, yes, yes! Of course I'll marry you. I love you so much!" I squealed and pulled her towards me.

Just as I was about to kiss her, she pulled away. "Wait," she said taking the ring out of the box and placing it on my finger. "Now we can kiss," she smirked.

"Well, good," I joked. And then we did…for a really long time. That night, the state park was the site of another major event in our relationship.

THE END...(and the start of a new beginning)
