Together
Again
by Katie
PART 18
Meanwhile
Things were very busy at the Singer residence. Because Katie's schedule was more flexible
than Jessie's, they had decided that Katie would do most of the arrangements for the
wedding. Of course she wouldn't make any major decisions without Jessie's consent. The two
of them had been on cloud nine since the camping trip. They realized what their lives were
missing: each other. Now that they had one another, their lives were now complete. Karen
and Lily were over the house as well, to help in any way they could. Over the years, Katie
had become like another daughter to them. Even when the two had split, both moms had kept
in touch with Katie. Leave it to moms to know how everything will work out
This Saturday was the first in over four months that Riley could finally sleep in, so of
course she didn't stumble downstairs with her hair a mop top at 11:30. She blinked a
little harder when she turned the corner to the kitchen. Katie, Lily, and Karen were all
busy away either on the computer, or on a phone. So Riley tried not to disturb anyone and
went to the fridge and got herself a strawberry yogurt and a banana and started walking in
the direction of her mom, who was sitting outside on the back porch, after getting a spoon
out of the drawer, and motioning a good morning to Lily and Karen.
Riley could tell that her mom was exhausted from all of the preparations for the wedding,
but anyone else wouldn't have been able to tell. Even before noon, Katie looked as
flawless as she did twenty years ago. She decided to "pop a squat" next to her
mom.
(Riley's POV)
"Hey Mom, how's the planning coming?" I asked in a tone that made me sound like
I was still five again, young and innocent while opening up my yogurt.
"Oh hey Riles, good morning, or should I say afternoon?" Wow, my mom is really
beautiful. And I'm not just saying that because she's my mom either. When she smiles, I
swear she could light up a whole country sometimes. I'm so glad I have her as my mom
because she always knows how to make me laugh and to be there for me.
"Ha ha Mom. Cut me some slack today. It's my first weekend off from soccer. Want some
of my banana? You're starting to look a little stressed out," I say a little bit
concerned and I lean against her shoulder as I eat my yogurt. What I wouldn't give to be a
little girl again. Then I wouldn't have to try to figure out exactly how to come to terms
with the fact that I really like Dani
"Sweetie, I'm just kidding. You've been working really hard lately, so you definitely
deserve a break." She then let out a big sigh and rested her head against mine.
"I'm thinking about just telling Lily and Karen they can design the whole wedding. I
forgot how much work goes into making a wedding. All I want to do is go back to bed.
We've been up since 7."
That's my mom for you: a trouper.
"So when's the wedding going to be again?" I have a heck of a time remembering
dates that I won't be graded on.
"If everything goes to plan, the wedding will take place on December 6th which is a
Friday."
[Quick note: Dec 6 is actually a Friday for both this year 2002 and the actual year this
is taking place in 2030. Just thought you guys would like to know that, lol]
"Wow, that's in a few weeks isn't it?"
"Yeah Riles, it is. But I mean everything is pretty much set up anyways. Both the
ceremony and the reception will be at the American Dreams Hotel that Jessie's dad helped
architect. And as far as everything else is concerned, I think Lily and Karen have been
planning this day for Jessie and I for a while now," she replied as she chuckled to
herself, causing me to lose the balance in my yogurt cup, which led to a minor food fight
between the two of us when my mom ended up with a wonderful light pink nose.
Inside
Lily and Karen finally got all of the details finished. This would be quite the wedding,
if they did say so themselves. The wedding would be very modern, but a storybook
nonetheless. Secretly, the two women have been playing this thing since before Jessie and
Katie had even graduated.
The hotel was pretty much brand new, heck; it won't even be open to the public until after
the New Year. Due to the overly long drive between New York and Illinois, Lily and Rick
were staying in one of the renovated rooms at the hotel, so he could be able to oversee
the project. Being as the wedding was only a few short weeks away, Henry and Karen took
some time off work and decided to come and stay in Buffalo until after the wedding. So of
course they too are staying in another one of the renovated rooms. Lily and Karen were
practically like sisters now. That was something neither woman thought would ever be
possible.
As they were about to leave Katie's and go back to the hotel, they couldn't help but awe
at how cute Katie and Riley looked together. Now being moms they both looked at each
other as their eyes grew slightly wider, as if an identical light bulb went off in each of
their heads. The idea? Would Jessie and Katie ever have a baby of their own? With that
notion, they left a note telling Katie they would get in touch with her later, perhaps
everyone could get together tonight for dinner and thanks for letting them help with the
preparations and walked out the door with grins on their faces and anticipation in their
hearts.
