Author's Note: This chapter will feature "Days Go By" by Dirty Vegas, the acoustic version, not the upbeat techno version. Feel free to d/l it, it'll probably help you to fully get the concept…

Here's the last part of Chap 1. …

Jessie gained eye contact with the rebel & though their eyes said much more, all that left Jess's mouth was a simple "hi" & Katie answered back, "hi." With wide smiles & new anticipations, they left the office in silence. Katie's heart was racing & she came to the decision that maybe she'd give this place a try & attempt to be a good girl this time around, because something or rather, someone, just might make staying worthwhile…

PART 2

Katie was so smitten with Jess that she didn't even bother to give Mr. Maguire one last piece of her mind because quite frankly, her mind was elsewhere. She followed the angel out of the office & into the now less crowded hallway.

"So, you're like some whiz kid? Jessie, right?" Katie asked, trying to stay true to her rebel attitude but still appeal to the girl.

"Umm…depends on your opinion of a `whiz kid.'" And yeah, my name's Jessie. You're Katie Singer am I correct?"

"Yep, that's me all right. Good old Katie Singer. So, you wouldn't happen to know of any good clubs around here, would you?"

"Sorry, you're probably asking the wrong person. But let's talk about your schedule. First period has already started," Jessie responded, as to almost avoiding the whole topic of having fun. Jess had found a formula for success. Of course this little plan didn't involve too much fun or very social activities, in the end it would be worth it, or so she thought. Jessie stopped walking and leaned up against a locker & Katie came to a halt about two steps behind. "Here, let me see what you have." Katie then handed over her schedule to her approximately five foot two friend.

"Well, well," Jess started, not quite sure if what she saw in front of her eyes was true. "Looks like you're going to have a fun time while you're here. Are you sure you're up to the challenge of World Lit & Calc?"

"Oh yeah," Katie said confidently as she looked Jessie up & down. "I'm ALWAYS up for a challenge." Then she gave this wicked grin. Not one that was nasty or mean, but the kind of grin someone gets when they're scheming something.

"Well, in that case, I'll take you to Mr. Lee's room for jazz band." Jessie then started walking down the hall, with Katie quickly behind her.

Halfway down the hall, Katie moved in front of Jess as they continued to walk. Now, Katie walking backwards, she started firing away questions. "So, what class are YOU missing right now? Is that good for your good girl image, skipping class?" Realizing quickly that Jessie wasn't going to open herself up to a perfect stranger just yet, Katie released her Singer charms & she began to sing loud enough so Jessie could hear, but soft enough so she was the only one who could hear. "Through the clouds a nice surprise. To see that twinkle, returning to your eyes." This of course stopped Jessie right in her tracks & a smile spread across Katie's face. "She's all mine," Katie thought as she saw Jessie turn ten shades of red.

Now as if Katie had been attending Sinclair High since freshman year, she continued walking down the hallway, following the slightly loud raucous that she could only assume was the band room. Moments later, Jessie snapped out of her daze to catch up with Katie. "Is this girl for real? God I hope so, `cuz I think I'm falling for her. Please don't let her be straight and/or taken," Jessie thought as she began to run down the hall to catch up. "Hey, wait up Katie. I have to warn you about Mr. Lee before you go in there."

Katie stopped right in front of the band room doors & turned towards a now out of breath Jessie. "And this warning would be?"

After catching her breath, she spoke. "Do you play an instrument & sing?"

"Yeah, why?"

"Well, as soon as you go in there, he's going to make you sing & play something. Just thought I'd give you a fair warning on that."

"Oh, ok. Let me think of something to play." A nanosecond later, she replied. "Okey dokey, I got one. Let's go J. I've got people to impress, starting with…you." Katie finished her statement with her back turned to the girl as she opened the doors & was welcomed by twenty some teens staring right at her with their eyes almost bulging out of their sockets. Mr. Lee, who was in the middle of the room, lowered his glasses & welcomed Katie into his class.

"Well Ms. Singer, as part of the jazz band's ritual, any newbie player has to perform a little something for the class. It can be anything you want really. Now if you want, I can give you a day or two to…" But before he could finish his sentence, Katie answered.

"Don't worry, I like to think on my feet. I'll play. Do you have an acoustic steel six string around?" Mr. Lee was very impressed at his new student's confidence. So was Jessie.

"Here you go Ms. Singer. Please, dazzle us with your song." The tone in Mr. Lee's voice was of two tones really. One, he was wondering if Katie's act was just that, an act or if she had real talent to back up her mouth. Two, he wondered if she really was as good as she came off to be, would she audition for his musical?

Katie took the guitar from Mr. Lee & grabbed a chair. She positioned her body so the left corner of the seat was between her legs. She then placed the butt of the guitar in the empty space between her legs, swung her right arm over the guitar, but first reached into her pocket & pulled out an electric pink pick. Clearing her voice as she strummed a few chords, tuning the guitar to her likings then took a deep breath, looked across the room at Jessie as she took a seat in the chorus section & smiled at her. Katie then closed her eyes delicately & began to sing.

Bouncing her left foot to the rhythm of the strumming throughout the song. She also never opened her eyes once. Her voice was that of a saddened angel, soft with a slight huskiness. Definitely sexy & as she sang, it seemed that the sounds of the strings & her voice put the entire room into a trance…

"You
You are still a whisper on my lips
A feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

And you leave me when I'm at my worst
Feeling as if I've been cursed
Bitter cold within

Days go by & still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by & still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Without you

And you
You are still a whisper on my lips
Feeling at my fingertips
That's pulling at my skin

Days go by & still I think of you
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
Days go by & still I think of you, yeah
Days when I couldn't live my life without you
You"

Katie strummed her last chord & let it ring. As she slowly opened her eyes & released her body of it's current position, she looked up at Jessie, who was so touched by the girl's performance, that there a soft tear was flowing down her face. Maybe tough girls really do have soft spots in their hearts. Or maybe it just takes an angel to open up the door.
