Like Wings on a Butterfly
PART
5
After their trip to the
mall, Karen and Jessie go home and Jessie helps Karen get ready for her "date."
Henry picks Karen up about 7 30. As soon as the door shuts behind them, Jessie
runs for the phone.
"Hello?"
"Is Katie there?"
"No, I'm sorry, she is out with Sarah. Can I take a message?"
"This is Jessie. I will try her on her cell phone."
"Ok. She asked me to be sure to give you the number if you called, but you have
it?"
"Yes, thank you, Mrs. Singer."
"You're welcome."
They hang up and Jessie dials again. "Hello? Sarah, turn that down please, I
can't hear."
'How's it
Gonna Be' by Third Eye Blind is blaring on the radio. "Sorry. Hello?"
"Hey! Are you busy?"
"No! Not at all. Sarah and I are just hanging out. We are just going to see
Freddy and Jason Join Forces and Take Over the World. What's up? Did you have
fun with your mom?"
"We ended up having fun. We watched Gone with the Wind and had sundaes, then
went to the mall. It started out kinda awkward, we passed a church where a
wedding was going on. Can we talk more about that later?"
"Awww, I'm sorry. Of course. Hang on a second...." she puts her hand over the
phone so Jessie can barely hear what she was saying and says to Sarah, "do we
have time to go get Jess?"
"The movie starts in 20 minutes and you know I hate being late. We are almost to
the theater. We don't have time to go back."
"Geez. I was just asking a question. You don't have to jump down my throat."
She takes her hand off the phone. "Jess? Sorry. I was asking Sarah if we could
come get you, but we don't have time to get to you and back before it starts.
She hates missing the previews"
"That's ok. I get freaked out at scary movies anyway, and it's not like I could
jump in your lap with Sarah there or anything."
"True. I'm impressed, Jess."
"I thought you'd like that."
"What happened to mother daughter bounding?"
"Oh believe me, we bonded enough for several weeks. When she picked me up she
told me Henry wanted to take her out tonight and that was fine after we spent
the whole afternoon together."
"That's cool but still a bummer."
"Don't worry. We didn't know. I'm sure I can find something to do to keep me
occupied. Sarah isn't really fond of me anyway, you know that, Kait. Are you and
Sarah having a sleep over?"
"Nope. I'm tired. I wanna go home and go to bed after the movie."
"Oh. Ok. Will you call me when you wake up tomorrow?"
"I don't think so.....before for sure."
"So you'll call me when you get home?"
"You got it."
"Enjoy the movie. Don't tell Sarah I said hi."
"I will and I wont. Have a good one. Bye!"
"Bye." They hang up just as they get to the theater. Sarah had been shooting
dirty looks at Katie throughout the whole phone call. Katie had acted like that
when she first started calling her too. They had dated briefly at the beginning
of the school year, but Katie had ended the relationship two months ago, a few
weeks after she had met Jessie. Sarah smelled a threat and she was not going
down without a fight.
"Two for "Freddy and Jason" please. "
"No, Sarah, it's ok. I ll pay for my own."
"I have the gift certificates. You can get the popcorn and soda."
"Alright." They go to the concession stand and Katie gets 2 sodas and an extra
large popcorn. They go into the theater and get settled. Katie is getting
popcorn when she feels Sarah's hand brush against hers. "Oh, did you want some?
Here." She passes Sarah the bucket.
This was NOT what Sarah had in mind. about 10 minutes later she put her hand on
the armrest next to Katie's. Katie moved her hand away. It was like that the
whole night. Finally the movie is over and they are back in the car.
"What's
with you tonight?"
"What do you mean, Sarah? I was going to ask you the same thing. I thought I
made it clear to you, I don't like you like that any more. I'm sorry and I don't
want to hurt you, but we are just friends."
"It's that Jessie, isn't it? Don't lie to me Katushka. What, I'm not interesting
enough for you?"
"Sarah, stop it. We broke up months ago. I didn't feel the same way you did and
I didn't want to lead you on. I thought we were over this."
"You never even gave me a chance."
"That's not true. I knew once we started going out that it wasn't going to work.
I gave it a few weeks but things didn't get better."
"Whatever." They ride the rest of the way in silence. After 20 agonizing
minutes, Sarah pulls in front of Katie's house.
"Thanks. I'll see you on Monday, ok?"
"Whatever." Katie didn't know what to say to calm Sarah down but at that point
she didn't really care. She knew Sarah had a jealous streak and she figured she
was better off giving her time to cool off. She had one thing on her mind.
"Hello?"
"Good evening, gorgeous."
"Oh, hey sexy. How was the movie?"
"The movie was good, but Sarah was being a pain."
"She was? I'm sorry. I shouldn't have called."
"Stop, Billie. You didn't know I was out with her. It's fine. You can call me
whenever you want, she's just not over me is all. I didn't realize she had it as
bad as she does. I'm sorry. If I had known, I would have left you a message
saying we were going out. I didn't tell her anything about us, and she didn't
ask. I hope she doesn't figure it out on her own."
"If she does, she does. We can deal. I didn't think you had said anything to
her."
"Promise me something? If she says anything to you when I'm not around, promise
you'll tell me as soon as you can?"
"I will. I don't like to keep things from you, which reminds me, are you sitting
down?"
"Yeah? Why?"
