Like Wings on a Butterfly
A/N: so no one says anything about continuity below about the movie reference
when Jessie is talking to Karen, the wrong title was intentional, not a
mistake.
PART
3
Jessie and Katie went into the living room and sat on the couch at opposite
ends. "Ummm,.." Jessie started, looking over at Katie with a blissful yet
nervous expression on her face.
"Yes, Billie?"
"Well........I want to......I don't know how to....." All the sudden Jessie
leans over and kisses Katie softly on her warm lips.
"Wow. I really like your idea of punnishment."
"I thought you might. I had been wanting to do that all day. So, um.....I
mean, what......that is, how,.....I've.."
Katie looks over at her nervous girlfriend and thinks that she had never
seen anything cuter in her life. She decides to take pity on Jessie. "Are
you wanting to talk a little more about 'us'?"
"Actually, yes I am. I wish I wasn't so worried about what people thought of
me. Perfect Jessie Sammler, I HATE that image."
"Bille, I thought we talked about this last night. I don't care who knows
about us right now, as long as we know and we can hang out. I mean, as long
as I don't hang all over you at school can we still talk and meet in the
halls like we have been?"
"Of course! God, sometimes the only thing that gets me through class is
knowing that when the bell rings, I'll get to see you again. I am going to
try to work on my fears about going public in therapy too, maybe that will
help. Also, one good thing about no one knowing is that no one is going to
try to keep us from spending time alone together."
"You mean so we can do things like this?" Katie leans her head down for
another kiss. This one lasts a little longer and is deeper than the ones the
couple usually share. They reluctantly end the kiss when they can't ignore
the need for oxygen anymore.
It took Jessie a few seconds to regain her breath and train of thought
before she replied. "Basically, yes. When my parents find out about us, we
probably won't be able to have any more sleepovers, and I for one am not
ready to give that up yet. I don't like being away from you." Jessie started
to blush.
"I don't either. Ok, so we cool it at school and in front of people, but
when we are alone, I can ravage your gorgeous body?"
"Only if I can do the same to yours.......um, Katie, what century are you
from? I don't know anyone who talks like that."
"Mock me if you must, but there are concequences. Watch and see how long it
will be before these lips touch yours again."
"Ouch! That hurts, that really hurts." Jessie pretended to pout and do the
puppy dog eyes.
"That won't work this time. It's not going to work.......it's not going to
work......it's not....."
"Three seconds....wow, that wasn't very long at all." Jessie grinned up at
Katie with a wicked gleam in her eye.
"I am weak. What can I say? Why don't we order the pizza....it is getting
late." They order and decide to watch "The Incredibly True Story of Two
Girls in Love." About 5 minutes into the movie, Jessie does something
incredibly cheezy. She yawns and stretches and puts her arm on the back of
the couch around Katie. They sit that way until the movie ends. "Well, I
guess we should at least get our homework started even though there is no school tomorrow."
"Slave driver."
"Yes, but it's only 8. My mom should be home within an hour, and I would
rather say good night to her before we go to bed so she won't come in....I
mean, unless you want to sleep on the floor? You do wanna spend the night,
right?"
"Of course! I would love to. It's too early to go to bed anyway, may as well
get the homework out of the way. They quickly got to work. About 90 minutes
later, they were finishing their work when Karen came home. "Hi girls."
"Hi, Mom. You remember Katie, right?"
"Yes, of course. Nice to see you again, Katie. Are you a Sophomore also?"
"You too, Mrs. Sammler. No, I am a Junior."
"Katie, please call me Karen. Mrs. Sammler makes me feel old. Did you girls
have fun?"
"Yeah, we ordered a pizza and watched "City of Angels. What about you and
Henry?"
"We had a lovely evening. We went to that new Indian restaraunt and then
went to a chamber concert. He said to tell you hello. Did Eli call? I didn't
see his car out there."
"We haven't seen or heard from him all night, mom. Is it ok if Katie sleeps
over?"
"He had better not miss curfew again tonight. Sure, Katie can stay over
anytime, honey. I am going to go change into something more comfortable, are
you girls about done with your work? Maybe we could watch a movie or
something?"
"We are about as done as we are going to get tonight, I think." She looked
over at Katie, who nodded. Jessie shot Katie a look that clearly said 'Help,
what do I say now?' Jessie hated to disappoint her mom, especially since the
divorce. Karen had been much less depressed since meeting Henry, but Jessie
didn't want to risk a relapse. Katie smiled back at Jessie that clearly said
she understood and it was fine. Katie wanted to get to know Jessie's whole
family better anyway.
"You girls don't have to keep me company, it's ok. I remember how sleepovers
are." Karen had seen the glances but did not catch the subtext beneath them.
"I know you have things you want to do, really honey, it's fine. I probably
won't be up that much longer anyway, Judy and I are going walking early."
"Are you sure, mom?"
"I am positive, honey. Go on, I'm sure you want to go gossip about boys and
things like that. Don't let me keep you."
"Well, ok. Night, I love you." Jessie gave Karen a kiss and hug and started
up to her room.
"Night, Karen."
"Night, Katie....oh Jess, don't forget, you have your appointment at 10
tomorrow. Can you be ready to go by 9 40?"
"Sure. See ya then. Tell Judy I said hi." The girls go upstairs and Jessie
gets a set of pajamas out for herself and for Katie.
"Will your mom notice if I change in here, Billie?"
"She won't think it is weird at all. All my girl friends change in the same
room for sleepovers."
"I thought I was your first girl?......Ouch! That hurt." Jessie had thrown a
pillow at Katie.
"Poor baby. Want me to kiss it and make it better?"
"Please." After Jessie played Doctor, the girls changed and got into bed.
"Billie?"
"Yeah, Billie?"
"Um.....well I was wondering, I mean, ......do you think your mom would let
me take you out to breakfast and take you to therapy tomorrow? That is, if
you want me to.....I mean......I haven't taken you on a real "date" yet and
I wanted to fix that."
Jessie thought Katie looked adorable when she was embarassed also. "I would
love to go out to breakfast with you and I am sure mom won't mind if you
take me to therapy. I don't mind, I mean after all, I don't have any secrets
from you, you know. Don't go anywhere, I'll go ask her quick." Jessie ran
out of the room and into the living room to have a brief converstation with
her mom. She bounced back into the bedroom 5 minutes later. "Done! That was
easy. I just told her I knew she had had a long week and I wanted her to be
able to have fun with Judy if she wanted, and not to rush home on my
account. She knows I feel bad about keeping her from doing stuff she wants
to do....soooo, you're stuck with me."
"Then it's a date? Did your mom happen to mention where they will go for
breakfast?"
"Yes, it is, and they usually go to that cafe across from the bookstore, but
if they decide to go somewhere else, thats alright, isn't it? I mean it's
not like we'll be all over each other or anything, at the restaraunt at
least."
"You're bad."
"And you're not?" The girls got into a tickle fight that lasted several
minutes. When they couldn't take anymore, they collapsed on the bed in
hysterics. "We'd better calm down or mom will come in and see what is so
funny. I don't want that right now."
"Me either. Ok....calming down...."
The girls lay back on the bed and Jessie leans over and kisses Katie. "Good
night. Sweet Dreams."
"Good night and sweet dreams to you too, Billie. ummmm....."
"You don't have to be afraid to ask me anything, Katie."
"I know...but.....I don't want you to feel.....that is, I don't wanna make
you uncomfortable.......but I was wondering if I could hold you while we
fall asleep?" Katie looked like she wanted to fall through the floor.
"Of course. Don't ever be afraid to ask that. I know you won't try anything
until I tell you it is ok and my mom never comes in my room without knocking
first, especially if I have a guest." The girls fall asleep in one another's
arms.
