In the Arms of an Angel
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: What's mine is mine, and Jessie and Katie aren't. Too bad for me.
Summary: The snow is melting, and so are Jessie's anxieties about her and Katie's relationship.
A/N:
Hola everyone, this is just something short and simple that I
wrote out of boredom. If you've seen the Christmas episode of The
O.C. you know where I got the mistletoe idea. I guess that should go
into my disclaimer as well?... For those who actually care, I'm
still working on "Two Worlds"… And lastly, on a side note: I miss
Madie, don't you guys miss Madie???
**********
It had stopped snowing a while ago, leaving behind a thick white
blanket cloaking everything in its sight. It a peaceful day and
there was hardly any sounds outside. Everyone was snuggled up in
their houses enjoying the peace.
Except for Jessie.
Although it was quiet, she still couldn't get away from the
things going through her head. Through it all, it never seemed to
cease that Katie was always the central focus of images that played
over and over in her mind. She was waiting for her girlfriend (she
was always waiting) in more ways than one.
Uneasy about her past, and worried about their uncertain future, in
her mind she called out to Katie, hoping that somehow, someway,
she'd hear her and come to her as she lay in her bed in a state
of turmoil.
Either by coincidence, or by the connection that they shared, the
doorbell rang. Jessie was quick to react, as she bounded down the
stairs in a hurry to answer the door for her girlfriend, which she
was certain was standing on the other side.
"Katie!" she exclaimed in relief to see the taller girl standing
there with a smile on her face. One smile was enough to make all the
uncertainties fade away. "What are you smiling about?" Jessie asked
feeling herself crack a small grin for the other girl, whose
Cheshire cat smile was contagious.
Katie only winked and pulled out something from her pocket, raising
her arm above her head, waving the object above them both.
Jessie looked up and smiled radiantly at the other girl. Her
girlfriend was so cute sometimes.
Mistletoe – scratch the "sometimes" and insert" always" between
the "was" and the "so."
She leaned up and kissed the taller girl, a reward for her
thoughtfulness. "Hey Billie," Jessie whispered against Katie's lips.
Still, Katie said nothing as she leaned her forehead against the
blonde and smiled. She pulled away, and Jessie groaned in protest.
Katie graced the younger girl with another radiant smile and pressed
her finger to her lips, hushing her. She took Jessie's hand and
pulled into the house, dragging her over to a chair which she forced
her girlfriend to sit in.
"Katie," Jessie asked in confusion, the silence starting to
worry her – this was Katie, she was never this quiet.
Katie only shook her head and held up a finger as if to say,"wait here."
Although thoroughly confused, Jessie agreed and watched Katie bound
up the stairs in the direction of her room.
As she sat waiting she contemplated over the situation, and how
everything about it mocked her. She was waiting (always waiting),
she was confused (which she knew was nothing new), and she was
starting to worry about the questions that she sought out from
Katie, which she obviously wasn't going to get anytime soon
considering the silent treatment. Again she was sucked into her own
world of anxieties that she felt doomed to never get away from.
Jessie was pulled out of her thoughts from a caress on her cheek and
a reassuring smile that her girlfriend gave her. She noticed that
Katie was holding her coat, mittens, and earmuffs and something in
Katie's eyes told her that everything was going to be okay. Jessie
allowed the older girl to wrap her coat around her shoulders and sat
in awe as Katie kissed each hand before putting the matching mittens
on her.
Katie directed Jessie out the door and into the front yard. Their
warm breath came out in puffs of steam and Jessie felt herself
shiver as a gust of cold wind hit them both. She unconsciously
reached out and grabbed Katie by the hand.
"Look," Katie said in barely a whisper. It had been the first
word that she had said since her arrival, and Jessie shivered again –
this time not because of the cold.
Jessie looked around, and gazed at her white, snow-covered
surroundings. She had already seen it all, and it didn't seem
different from the time she saw it as she looked down at the streets
below her from her window upstairs. "I know," Jessie agreed. She
would agree to anything Katie pointed out, even if she didn't know
what she had been agreeing to. She would do anything for the girl
that stood beside her, and she would do just about everything to get
closer to Katie, even if it means looking at the world around her
differently. Jessie looked around her once more, this time looking
for something else, this time looking for what Katie saw.
"No," Katie smiled down at the blonde, "look," she said as she raised
their intertwined hands eye level to them both.
Jessie looked down at their interlinked hands and smiled. She
embraced the tingly feeling that ran through her, as she felt
herself get trapped in the moment, trapped in their closeness,
trapped in the beauty that was Katie, trapped in the beauty that
was "them."
Trapped, yes, until she felt cold ice being patted onto her head
from Katie's opposite hand, where the snow had appeared out of
nowhere.
"Hey!" the blonde exclaimed as her girlfriend let go of her hand and
ran for cover. She was quick to retaliate and it was easy for her to
gather enough snow in her hand to throw at the other girl, hitting
Katie right smack in the back of her head. Jessie laughed as the
taller girl gathered up more snow that she flung at her, not even
coming close to hitting her target.
Looking back at it, Jessie couldn't recall how long they played
in the snow, but it didn't matter. What did was that in that moment
she felt a part of herself breaking free, and for once in her life,
it felt good to be Jessie. Katie had given her that gift, and it was
one that she would forever be thankful for.
Exhausted and out of breath, she laid down in the snow and gazed up
at the sky. It was starting to snow lightly, and the flakes felt
refreshing as it hit her heated face. She smiled and moved her arms
and legs to make the pattern she wanted in the snow.
Katie jogged over to her girlfriend, still giggling from all the
excitement. She plopped down next to Jessie and pushed a stray
blonde lock away from the other girl's eyes. "A snow angel, huh?"
Jessie smiled.
"You don't hafta be in the snow for that," Katie smiled and moved
closer to the smaller girl, "you are already an angel."
Jessie melted at the sincere look that her girlfriend gave her and
with the feeling, her insecurities and anxieties melted as well. She
wrapped her arms around Katie and kissed her with all the passion
she never knew she had. She told the Katie how she felt without
saying a word.
When they both pulled away, they were both out of breath from the
intensity of it all. Jessie saw something in Katie's eyes and in
that exact moment, she knew that she no longer had to wait.
"I love you," Katie said, and it was the most beautiful thing to
Jessie's ears.
"I love you," Jessie replied, and as they pressed their lips against
each other again, the world around them ceased to exist.
THE END.
