PART 5
School
The weekend had passed and Katie had not called. Katie already knew
that school this moment, no, this week was going to be painfully
unbearable. Katie made her way into the main hall. She knew what
awaited her.
(KT)"How can I do this? Maybe if I pretend I don't see them. No, I got
it worked out. Play nonchalant…"(/T)
"Katie!" Jessie said excitedly as she approached Katie at a fast pace.
Jessie flung her arms around Katie, giving her a welcoming hug. Katie
could not resist this girl as she melted into her warm embrace.
"Hi" Katie replied quietly
"I thought you were going to call. I waited but…"
Katie cut Jessie off "Sorry about that. My weekend was completely busy and I couldn't find your number…" Katie was lying and Jessie knew it.
Something was wrong, Katie seemed distance, some sort of cold had be-stilled her emotions.
Jessie opened her mouth, but before the words could reach her throat Katie cut her off
"I gotta go, I'll talk to you later ok?"
"Yeah, uh, sure."
Katie walked off not turning around to look back at Jessie. She knew that Jessie would be looking at her, and she didn't want to recognize any guilt that she already felt.
(KT)"Today is going to be breezy. All I have to do is find some place where no one will find me. It seems easy enough. I think I will go and see the geeks, avoid any place where Tad will be, any place where Jessie will be."(/T)
"Where's Katie? I gotta talk to her!" Tad was a little excited, the reasons were unknown to all and no one really seemed to care.
"You just missed her. She went that way." Jessie explained as she pointed in the direction that Katie had taken a few moments ago.
Katie strolled along the corridors blankly. She was so drain, her self conflict had taken all her energy. Not only that, but school was not helping at all. Katie felt someone place their hand on her shoulder, she didn't comprehend what they were saying, it was all mumbled due to her lack of existence at that moment.
"Katie! Did you hear me!" Tad was trying to force all the words back at her again.
"The movie! The one I wanted to see! It's released tomorrow." Tad felt like he was speaking to himself, Katie responded a moment late "Movie?
Oh, yeah. That's right. When do you want to go?"
"Well tomorrow wouldn't be a bad idea." Tad replied sarcastically
"What's it called again?"
"The Ring! Come on Katie get with it." Tad placed his arm around her neck and dragged her off down the corridor, Katie couldn't fight with him. She just went with the flow.
Tad continued to pull Katie down the halls. They were approaching a group of people.
"Hey Jess, you wanna come to the movies tomorrow with me and Katie?" Katie felt her heart sink.
"Yeah, sure. That's if Katie doesn't mind?"
"She's fine. She doesn't care, do ya Katie?"
"Nup, it's find by me." As Katie's eyes fell to the floor the bell rang. Relief flooded her face, she spun around, unhooked herself from Tad's grasp.
"I'll catch up with yous later" Katie was off practically running down the hallway.
Lunch wasn't going to be any fun. Katie had scrapped her plans for hiding out and decided just to "deal with it."
Katie stood still for a moment before she took her seat directly across from Jessie. She hadn't planned the seating arrangements, they just happened. Katie pulled out the chair and sat down. Katie's movements were awkward and Jessie noticed this. The fact was Jessie had noticed Katie had been acting a little strange all day.
Jessie sat there and watched as Katie and Tad rattled on about everything and anything that came to their minds.
(JT)"Is it me? I am I the one who has caused her to be this way? I thought that she liked me? I'm sure that she does. No, I'll have to talk to her, find out what's wrong…"(/T)
"Jess, 7?"
"What, huh?"
"7, We'll pick you up at 7. Is that ok?" Tad said as he looked at his girlfriend with curiosity. She was obviously miles away.
"7's fine." Jessie lowered her eyes to the table. She never realised how old it was (the table, that is.)
The whole room started for the doors. The next set of classes were about to start. Tad made his way out into the hallway with Russ tagging behind. Jessie was motionless, she didn't seem to want to move.
"Jessie, are you ok?" Katie was concerned for Jessie, she had been in this state all lunch. It seemed that she wouldn't have said a word all lunch if Tad hadn't shook her from her thoughts.
"Yeah, but the question is… Are you?" Jessie spun the question to reflect her mental state
"Of course, I…" Katie began to speak but was cut short
"No your not, you've been estranged all day, why?" Jessie demanded an answer
"I have not!" Katie said backing away from Jessie
"Is it what happened the other night? Is that why you are acting like this?" Jessie was confused
"Jessie you don't understand. Tad and I. We're friends, best friends!
What we did was wrong!" Katie went on pleading
"Your right I don't understand, I thought that you… You liked me"
Jessie felt a sharp pain shot through her and Katie could see it.
"We can't talk about this now, we'll talk later, ok?" Katie said secretly
"Fine. Whatever!" Jessie then stormed off leaving Katie in the room alone like she always was.
A few moments later Jessie was fidgety at her desk, she just couldn't concentrate.
(JT)"AGRHHH! What is her problem? I try to talk to her and she blows me off? Well see about that."(/T)
Katie in another class felt somewhat distracted from learning anything
at all. Instead she scratched a pen frantically across a piece of
paper, trying to relieve herself.
"If I utter the words I believe in my heart true
will you feel it the same as I?
Or will reaction force you to reject me
Reject us?
My love for you unhinged
Completely enticed by your eyes
And led onto adore your heart"
Katie read over the piece of paper that sat before her.
(KT)"Did I just write this? Sounds like crap to me. It's nothing, nothing compared to my heart."(/T)
The last bell rang. Jessie packed up her things, jammed them into her bag and headed straight for the door. Jessie wasn't expecting Katie to be waiting outside for her. Katie grabbed onto Jessie's elbow and pulled her out of the mad rush.
"I know…we need to talk. Is now a good time for you?"
"Where did you want to go?" Jessie replied curiously
"Anywhere, anywhere quite." Katie said as she looked around, her eyes watching the sea of people carefully.
"We can go to my mom's, she won't be home until later." Jessie said as
she tugged on Katie's jacket to get her attention.
