PART 2

Katie's House

Katie lay on her bed drifting into a induced dream. "Her face so soft…Warmth that seems to cover me…" A dream that was cut short by the flinching reaction to an awfully loud phone.

"Hello?"

"Hi. Katie, glad I caught you. You took off so early from school this arvo. Where did you go?"

"Home obviously. Why? What's wrong now Tad?"

"Nothing. Just wondering if you were coming over tonight"

"What's happening tonight?"

"My party, REMEMBER?"

"Oh, yeah, I remember…"

"I'll be there around 7. You want me to bring anything?"

"No. Just yourself, and maybe some munchies, alcohol, music….."

"So, you want me to make the party then?" Katie waited for response laughing at her own wonder.

"Yeah, maybe you should. So I'll see you at 7 then?"

"Yep. See ya"

"God, do I really have to go? I just want to stay here… Alone.  "She" might be there. What if she is? It's not like you can do anything.  It's not like this will change."  Katie struggled with her thoughts, knowing that it was her obligation to go. Tad after all was her best friend.

Katie spent the next 2 hours trying to find something decent to wear.  Not like she was looking to impress anyone, but it just seemed like the right thing to do. Dress up, that is. Finally she found a top that would go with her favorite pair of jeans, without looking to daggie.  She glanced over to the clock that was just visible, cluttered by clothes and other objects, which had been flung there over the past few days.

"Time to go. Maybe if I think of something really tragic… Then I won't have to go… No, it would never work."

As she made her way out of the house she quickly grabbed a small notebook, a pen and tucked them away inside her jacket.   "At least if the party is boring I will have something to fall back on."  With that thought she closed the door and stepped onto the path that would lead her to tonight's unfortunate celebration.

Tad's House

Katie approached the front door with caution. She looked it over, as if she had never been here before. Katie took a deep breath.

"It's now or never. Hmm… I wonder if Tad would notice if I didn't turn up. Ahh, he's been planning this since he found out his parents where going away, I can't do this to him now.  Besides, I am the life of the party.  Without me, this whole thing will go to shit."

After the thoughts floated away Katie stepped up and knocked on the door.

"Hey! You going to let me in?" Katie said sarcastically like she had been standing there for the past hour.

A voice returned as she opened the door

"Sorry we didn't know that you were here." Jessie looked at Katie for a moment before stepping aside to let her in.

"How have you been Jessie? I haven't seen you in… Years" Katie asked trying to keep small talk before she walked off.

"I'm fine…" Jessie replied, but found that Katie was already leaving her presence.

Katie walked through the house in search of her best friend.  She continued to the kitchen where Tad had his head stuck inside the fridge. Katie walked up behind him and gave him a shove into the fridge.

"Are you sure you're in far enough? I don't think you've breathed on everything in there yet. I'll help you…" and with that Katie gave him another quick push into the fridge.

"Katie! What the hell are you trying to do?" Tad was frustrated at something, he would let her know soon enough.

"I can't get the door to close." Tad with his head out of the fridge was pushing his weight up against it trying to shut it.

"Move stupid." Katie said as she pushed him out of her way.

"With all the years you have been at school, you are still are the only person I know that has the I.Q. of a toddler." Katie said jokingly as she rearranged the fridge.

"There, done. If you have any more problems, find someone else to fix them." Katie said standing up and closing the door. Katie turned around to find that Tad was gone and she was left standing with a slightly amused Jessie.

"I'll let him know that. I still can't understand myself why on this fair earth they let him out of the mental institution?"  Jessie said.

Katie let out a little chuckle. Any pokes at Tad was all fun and games, any truth involving Tad deserved a laugh.

Katie looked at Jessie semi-serious

"Where did Tad go?" as if she was concerned about his where-abouts.

"I think he wanted to find some music or something…" Jessie said slightly confused at why Katie was trying to avoid her.

"Don't worry, I don't really listen to him either. He just talks to much sometimes." Katie said noticing that Jessie was looking at her oddly now.

"I'd better go find him before he destroys this party before it has started." Katie say as she exited the room.

"Was I always like this? Anyone would think that I was allergic to people. Well, some of them do stink…" Katie was entertaining herself in search of somewhere peaceful to sit. People had been smothering her all night.

"It's got to be illegal to have that many piercing on one limb…" Katie continued to amuse herself as she headed out the kitchen door. Katie finally found one just outside the kitchen door. She sat down and took out her notebook and pen. Katie began to write. All the words, that she dare not say.

Katie jerked back, not noticing the notebook slipping out of her hand and onto the seat next to her.

"Jeez, Katie I've been looking for you for the past hour and a half.

What are you doing?" Tad asked sounding displeased as he burst through the door.

"Nothing, do I have to let you know my every move do I?"

"No… Come on, the conversation is getting boring inside."

"Well, Tad that's what you get when you invite morons to parties!"  Katie said sarcastically

Tad and Katie made their way into the house joking and fighting.

"Do people always stand so close when they speak? I need to get some fresh air or I'm going to die."

Jessie made her way through the kitchen opening the door to find a seat.

"I wonder if anyone will find me here? Jessie sat down taking a few deep breaths. She began to relax, being surrounded by so many people was just to much for her.

"How do Katie and Tad handle it? Doesn't it get annoying all those people crowding around them?"

Jessie placed her hand at her side. She noticed that there was something underneath it. She grasped it and brought it to her lap.

Jessie opened the notebook and started to read the first few lines within it.

"The curse is mine, to walk alone without you. The wind whispers your name, as the clouds call for your return. Here I am alone without you.

Needing you to be here, you are the air that I breathe. You are the simple reason why I live."

Jessie heart started to beat rapidly, she had never read anything that made her feel so real. Such raw emotion transferred through ink on paper. She wanted to keep reading but she felt that there was someone approaching. She jammed the note book into her pocket hoping that whoever was now standing behind her didn't notice her panic at their presence.

"Hi Katie" Tad said approaching Katie from behind who was caught in standing in the doorway.

"You lose something" Tad noticed that Katie was looking around franticly for something. Katie had been retracing her steps and she had been lead as far as the door.

Jessie caught her breath in surprise. Jessie sprung up out of the seat, which she had been occupying for the past few minutes.

"No, nothing. I dropped some money here earlier, but I guess someone has taken it"

"No problem, how much you lose?"

"Only a couple dollars" replied Katie as Tad pulled her through the door allowing Jessie room to get through. He put his arm around her and Jessie as he dragged them of into the main room.

"Hey! Hey people!" Tad yelled trying to get everyone's attention.

"Has anyone found any money in the kitchen? It's Katie's and she would like it back"

A few people murmured with disinterest. Tad turned to Katie, he had given up before the search had even started. "Sorry, no luck here."

"Hey, that's mine." Tad called out to one of his friends which was seated on the lounge. Tad made his way over swinging his arms around in the air.

Jessie who was standing behind Katie at this point knew that Katie wasn't looking for lost money, but her notebook. She leaned in closer to Katie's ear and began to whisper to her. Hairs started to prickle on Katie's neck… The warmth of Jessie's breath caressing her ear, her neck, her heart. This sent the blood to boiling point, and Katie's body began to feel strained and achy.

"I have what you are looking for."  "I found it outside, I didn't want to give it to you back in front of Tad."

Katie spun around it shock.

"What if she read it? What do I say? How can I explain it? Does she know what it means?"

All the thoughts swirled around inside Katie.

She caught her composure and began to reply "Can I have it back, please?"

"Sorry, yes. I just wanted to say…"

"What? What did you want to say" Katie said defensively without thinking.

"That… your… your writing is beautiful." Jessie was caught of guard.

"You read it" Katie asked with a displeased undertone.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to… I'm not usually like…" but before Jessie could finish Katie butted in

"Don't worry about it. It's just thoughts, right?" Katie said trying to reassure herself without sounding too nervous or even worried, which she was.

"Are you sure?"

"Yeah, it's fine"

"I'd love to read more. Do you… Have you got any that I could read?…. Sometime?"

"Uh, I… don't… I'm not too sure."

"Katie, god, get a hold of yourself, it's a simple question"

"Simple but they are, she is…"

"I'll check" and with that Katie wandered of carelessly leaving Jessie standing by herself.

It took Katie all of 10 seconds to find Tad within the really thin crowd.

"Tad, I'm going to head now."

"You'll be right on your own?"

"Of course, but I am not alone. I might even be VERY not alone!"

"Tad, you are so tasteless, what that girl sees in you, I'll never know. I'll see you later."

With a quick wave, she opened the front door and exited out onto the pathway.

Jessie seen Katie practically raced up to Tad and then made her way to the door. Jessie was overcome by a sudden urge to follow Katie.

"When did I become so nosey? I should really apologize. I shouldn't have read her book…"

Jessie continued to scold herself as she. Jessie didn't want to admit to herself that it was what she had read a few moments ago that cause these feelings to stir inside of her. All she knew was that she had to leave.

"The party wouldn't be greatly missed anyway."  she thought to herself as she quietly slipped out of sight, and then out the front door.

Outside

Katie didn't seem too far ahead, only about 200 meters or so.

"What am I doing? Why am I following her? I hope she doesn't think that I am a stalker or a vampire that is going to drag her into a alley or something and suck her clean of blood." Jessie kept walking getting closer and closer to Katie. Smiling to herself, Katie walked down the pathway thinking about Jessie "She is so beautiful. Her eyes, those eyes… Hummm… She was so close to me… She was so warm… I could have…"

Suddenly Katie was stunned, Jessie was walking right next to her.

"What is she doing here?"

" What are you doing here?" Katie asked Jessie trying to conceal her smile.

" I didn't feel like staying at the party, it was way too boring for my liking. So, I thought I would see what you were up to." Jessie said and then let out a sigh of relief.

Katie still trying to hide her smile by clinching her teeth, she then realised that she just might break them if she kept it up any longer and that wouldn't do any wonders for her face. She released solemnly and sighed at the relief she felt straight away.

"I was just going to go home. Maybe watch some TV, or something."

"Oh…."

"You can join me if you want, but I am warning you it's not going to be a big event like the party we just left." Katie tried on the lamest joke in the world for size. To her surprise, it didn't fit.

"You don't mind?" Jessie asked "I didn't want to intrude or anything."  Jessie continued feeling a little self- conscious.

"No it's fine. Come on." Katie said as she pulled her up onto the pathway leading to Katie's house.
