Summary: AUFic and Sequel to "i ho'okahi kahi ke aloha - Surfer's Heartache". After one year apart, with just short visits, Jessie and Kate finally meet again.

**********

Jessie sat in her apartment, staring at the clock on the wall... waiting for the hand to pass the twelve. Time for mail! As every day... ok, almost every day, not when she had courses or lectures... but today, definitely today. And... and... there it is 11 o'clock... time to look for mail.  She smiled to herself, laughing at her own behaviour and stood up to open the door.

At the same moment someone knocked. That was unusual... normally she just opens, gets her mail and closes the door... but the postman never knocks.  Suddenly she got nervous. Maybe there was no mail today... maybe Katie forgot to write... after one year constantly and reliably writing every day? No way! Maybe it was one of her friends...

She opened the door and looked at the broadly smiling face of the postman.

"Good morning, Ms Sammler. Seems your secret admirer has sent you a small parcel today! Here you are!"

Kind of flustered Jessie took the pack.

"Secret admirer?"  She asked uncertainly.

The man started laughing and his chubby stomach bounced

"Two letters every day... all covered with hearts and flower? Who else but a secret admirer?"

Jessie smiled proudly... that's my girl, mister! Then she nodded.

"Ehm... ok... right... secret admirer."

"Have a nice day!"

Jessie slammed the door shut and stumbled into her bedroom, sitting down on the bed. The small parcel in her lap, she started opening it.

"Hey Jess!

I see you got up early... just for my letter. But as you see: No letter today. Have you already found the sweets? I hope you like them. These are the original German gummibarchen... I just love them, but only the red ones... ok, the orange ones, too... I'm babbling, sorry, hon. Try one! Jess? I said try one. No, baby, you won't become fat, when you eat them, it's ok... and if you become fat, I'll love you anyways and help you with your diet. Can you see me laughing? I hope so! Try them now! Ok... ok... great... I only have time for one letter today, I have an appointment with one of the officials today. You know, the guys who sponsor my studies. Frank, you remember... the boss of the advertising agency I'm working at, helped me a lot and it seems that I probably can start my studies next semester. That means from April on I'm an official student of design. You won't believe how happy I am... it's so cool. By the way: I started to get used to Berlin. I still have my problems with the language... all this dem, den, des, der, die... all sounds the same and means something different... Seems Maui stole away some of my brightness. Aww, Jess.. yes! I know... not Maui... it's the pot. Thanks for reminding me! Temperatures are increasing, I love that... trees getting leaves... blue sky. The town isn't so grey and cold anymore. You should come here sometime! Well, you must come here some time, because it seems that I'm going to stay for a couple of months. Studying and working. Sounds good, doesn't it? Me working and studying? And you just have to see my apartment. It's small and I'm still lacking a lot of furniture, but it's wonderful. I've already told you all that, haven't I.
Damn, it's late! I have to go, the appointment... I'm sorry, the letter is so short. Love ya... Take care and... we'll "see" tomorrow.

Kisses, Katie."

Jessie folded the letter and let herself fall back into her pillows, smiling widely. The sweets fell over and spread on Jessie's bed, but she didn't care. Since Katie had stopped travelling, things improved. One of her former college buddies worked in an advertising agency in Germany and when Katie arrived in Berlin, he instantly tried to convince her of staying. After a few weeks she started to work in the agency... and... here we are... Katie applying at an university... studying design... renting an apartment...

She sounded so happy. Jessie longed to see her again, they have seen the last time on Thanksgiving, when visited her parents. It really was time, that they had more than a few hours together...

Jessie closed her eyes and slowly... an idea developed.

**********

The door fell hard into its lock and started running down the wooden stairs. Her apartment was the last one on the top floor in an old building in Charlottenburg. Katie rushed across the street, seeing the streetcar arrive, she sighed in relief. She was already late... they won't mind, her boss won't mind, but she didn't like it...

She stepped into the wagon and sat down on one of the free seats. Damn, I'm tired! I can't believe it. I got to bed so early and I still feel like I haven't slept at all. She smiled to herself... she spent yesterday afternoon writing a four pages long letter to Jessie... after it she had to ran to the post office, otherwise it wouldn't have arrived on time and Jessie would be worried. And: She didn't want Jessie to worry. Never. Never again... to be honest. At the beginning it had been hard, she missed her so much, that she could think properly... now, after almost a year she was used to it... even though she was never going to like it. There must be some way, they can be together again.

"Katie! Hey! Katie!"  A familiar voice sounded through the streetcar.

Someone pushed and shoved his way through the crowd.

She grinned when she recognized Emre, a Turkish guy whom she met at a gay-lesbian party a few weeks ago. They meet on their ways to work sometimes, because they take the same streetcar to the town centre.

"Hey E!" She smiled at him, when he sat down next to her.

"Alles klar bei dir? Bist du auch zu spät?"

"Can we speak English please," Katie grinned and glanced at her watch,  "I have been awake for just one hour."

"No problem. Then: How are you?" He smiled back at her.

"I'm fine... but late."

"Me, too. Overslept... long phone call."  His eyes started to sparkle and Katie nodded knowingly.

"I see... your boyfriend isn't in town."

Emre shook his head.

"No... official trip again."

And that was their common ground: Relationships on a distance. Emre's boyfriend was a manager of a huge company and he spent most of his working time visiting subsidiary companies in Europe. Katie patted on his back.

"Don't worry, E! He'll be back soon.. as for my girlfriend... she's not here... and I doubt that I'll see her again soon."  She sighs.

"I know, I know. Have you talked to her lately?"

Katie shook her head.

"I called her last week... three hours talking... very, very, very expensive."

Emre smiled.

"Love letters are better anyway."

She nodded. "Totally, but it isn't the same... You know? I want her here... in my arms."

"Ich verstehe... geht mir genauso. Hey... ehm... will you come to the party tomorrow?"

"Party? What sort of party?"

"Turkish one... you know...," he grins, "gay one... to be precise... Turkish and gay... where we met the first time. It's again this month."

Katie laughs.

"Oh, I don't know if I can stand this again... I don't like those motto parties..."

Emre grinned.  "You're lying. You enjoyed it, because it was different... See... you're smiling! All my friends will be there, you have to come."

Katie tried to hide her grin. "I can't! Sorry, E. Really. It... I can't go party all the time... without Jessie. I'll get a guilty conscience again."

"That's a reason but not a problem. Come on! There'll be so many people... you know... the girls will be there too, all of them..."

"I'll see, ok? I'm going to call you."  She gave in.

He nodded and stood up. "That's my stop. Tschüss!"

**********

When Katie came home that night, she was still tired. She changed and fell into her bed, almost half asleep. While working her thoughts had been occupied otherwise. Jessie, the party... then Jessie again... she wanted to have some fun, definitely... but not without Jessie.

Then suddenly the phone rang. Katie crawled out of the bed and stumbled to the phone.

"Yes?" Her voice all sleepy and hoarse.

"Kat? Baby? Are you ill?"  Jessie panicked. It's late at night... okay... but she sounds... bad... really.

"Jessie? I'm... no. It's...," Katie sat down on the floor, expecting this to be a longer call, "I had been asleep. It's about two o'clock here."

A load cracking sound disturbed them, roaring of engines.

"What was that? Jessie? Where are you?"  Katie asked, suddenly getting suspicious. Her heart started skipping a few beats.

Then she heard Jessie laugh.

"Wait a sec, honey... I have to... read... this sign... it says: Berlin... Temp... Tempel...hof... aah, yes! Berlin, Tempelhof."

And that's when Katie let the receiver fall down. Jessie...was... here... She didn't know if she should laugh or cry from joy. Then she heard Jessie's voice.

"Katie? Katie? Are you still there? Katie?"

It took Katie a few seconds to regain her composure. Then she takes the receiver and answers nonchalantly:

"Honey, your accent is horrible."

"What?"  Jessie grinned, watching another plane take of.

"Yes... I can't believe it. You're here... well, almost."

"Yes I'm here, waiting for you to pick me up!"

"Pick you up? Now? She glances at the clock on the wall.

"Yes. Do you want me to spent the night on the airport?"

Katie sighes playfully.  "Hmm... I don't know... it'll take some time... give me an hour, ok?"

"An hour?"

"It's not that it the airport is around the corner and I haven't got a car."

Do we argue? Katie asked herself, while thinking about which subways and streetcars she has to take.

"Ok... ok, then... I can't wait to see you!"  Jessie whispered and caused Katie to shiver.

Great, she isn't even here and I'm already starting to feel all giddy... this ocean isn't good for our relationship.
